How to practice self-care during this time

This January, it is important to make sure you take care of your mental health and wellbeing. If you put yourself first, you can further ensure that you can be there for other people around you. Here are some of our tips for how to care for yourself during this time.

Go for a walk

It can sometimes be hard to get out and about when the days get shorter. But the colder seasons can surprise you with some refreshing local walksSpending time outside is beneficial to both your mental and physical health, even walks you do every day can be opportunities for mindfulness.

Keep in contact with friends and family

Throughout last year, families and friends have been coming together over the phone from Facetime to Zoom to enjoy a quick catch up or a competitive quiz night!

Learn a new skill

Teach yourself to cook, learn a new craft or do an online course to keep your mind active.

Take a break from digital devices

Read a book, play with a pet, play a board game.

Create yourself a simple work out to get yourself moving, there is some great ones on YouTube.

Hiking

Practice mindfulness

Stop and breathe. Take in your surroundings, listen to the noises, smells, and light around you and allow calmness to wash over you.

Have a good clear out

A tidy house makes for a tidy mind. Declutter that t-shirt at the back of the wardrobe that does not fit anymore, get rid of those out of date food items in your kitchen cupboards. You will feel much better for it afterwards.

Eat healthy

Eating unhealthily can make you anxious, tired, and more irritable. Making sure you eat nutritious foods can help keep your body and mind on a positive track.

Practice gratitude

Create a list of all the things you’re grateful for in your life, sometimes when times are hard, we just need that little reminder.

Random acts of kindness

Helping out your community can really give you a positive boost. Whether it is collecting shopping for an elderly neighbour or sending some happy mail to a struggling friend.
