As most of the UK is looking to detox after an indulgent Christmas, there are some easy and accessible ways to incorporate exercise into your daily routine to kickstart the new year in a positive way.
Walking
Walking is a simple way of exercising that is much more effective than most think. Walking is beneficial for your cardiovascular system and is a great way to clear your head with the crisp fresh air. You can make your walks more interesting by trying to find different walking routes each time you go out or challenge yourself to walking a certain distance by the end of the month!
HITT exercises
If you’re busy and find it hard to fit in exercise HITT workouts may be for you. Write down 15 of your favourite exercises to work 30 seconds on and have a 20 second break. This will get your heart rate up and calories burnt! Remember to warm up and cool down to prevent injury!
Household chores
Moving around the house when doing tasks such as cleaning, washing and hoovering can start to burn calories and is a great way of moving around getting your muscles warm. Keeping your space clean and tidy is good for your mind and keeps you active.
Another way to use your house for exercise is to use everyday items within your workout, such as holding a tin of beans or bottle of washing detergent as your weight to increase the calories you burn.
Yoga
If you would like a slower paced way to get into exercise in the new year, yoga is based on strength, flexibility and breathing. There are a wide range of yoga workout vidoes on Youtube to follow, from beginner to advanced.
Running
If you’re brave enough to go out in the cold you may take up running to kick start a healthy 2021! There are many ways of getting into this if you’re a beginner, with plans such as ‘Couch to 5K’. Make sure you wrap up warm if you take this up!
