St Patrick's Day Party at Home

Celebrate in style this year with our top tips on holding a St Patrick’s Day party at home for your household.

How to decorate

To truly get into the spirit, you may decide to put up some decorations. The traditional colours of Ireland are green, white and orange (or gold), so anything in those colours will definitely give your room a St Patrick’s feel. If you’re feeling crafty, or want to get the kids involved, why not make your own decorations? Check out our simple crafts below;

Four-leaf clover

This simple, but elegant four-leaf clover is the perfect addition to any St Patrick’s Day party, and will look great hung on the fridge, or from a door.

How to make:

Tear a mixture of light green, dark green, and white tissue paper into small pieces. Put the pieces flat between self-sealing laminating pouches and seal. Cut out a four-leaf clover shape and hole punch a hole at the top to tie some ribbon through.

For an easy make, you can download and print our ready-made bunting. All you need to do is cut it out, thread through some ribbon, and hang where desired.

What to do

For a bit of added fun, especially if you have kids, you might want to plan some board games, or try our St Patrick’s themed games below.

Treasure hunt

In the same way you may do an Easter egg hunt, you could buy some gold coins and hide them around the house and garden. You could then create a treasure hunt map and give clues to the locations of the coins…just don’t forget where you’ve hidden them!

Find the pot of gold

Like the traditional ‘pin the tail on the donkey’, draw a colourful rainbow on some paper (the bigger the better), then from a separate piece of paper, draw a pot of gold and cut out. Whilst blindfolded, each player takes it in turns to try and place the pot of gold as close to the end of the rainbow as they can. You could pick some prizes for the winner too.

What to eat

Irish Stew

A hearty Irish stew for the whole family. An easy recipe that can be adapted to your taste and cooked in the slow cooker.

1. Heat the slow cooker if necessary, then heat the oil in a frying pan. Sizzle the bacon until crisp, tip into the slow-cooker pot, then brown the chunks of lamb in the pan. Transfer to the slow-cooker pot along with the thyme, onions, carrots, potatoes, stock, bay leaves and enough water to cover the lamb. Cover and cook on Low for 7 hrs.

2. Stir in the pearl barley and leek, and cook on High for 1 hr more until the pearl barley is tender.

3. Stir in the butter, season and serve scooped straight from the dish.

Guinness Chocolate Puddings

The adults in the house are sure to love these indulgent chocolate puddings.

1. Butter four 9 x 5cm ramekins and set aside. Tip the butter, chocolate and a pinch of salt into a heatproof mixing bowl. Set over a small pan of just-simmering water and stir until melted, then remove from the heat and leave to cool.

2. Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 and put a baking tray on the top shelf to heat up. Put the sugar and eggs in a large mixing bowl and beat until pale, almost doubled in volume and thick enough to leave a trail when the beaters are lifted up. Gently fold in the melted chocolate and the Guinness. Spoon the mixture into the ramekins, then chill in the fridge for 1 hr.

3. Place the ramekins on the hot baking tray and bake for 18 mins. Remove from the oven and leave to stand for a minute, then serve with a dollop of cream if preferred. Enjoy!
