Try something new...

As part of the great experience our owners can enjoy as part of the Oyster Bay family, we have our very own Water Sports & Sports Coordinator Lois on-hand to help owners enjoy the local area with a calendar of both water and land-based activities including surfing, paddleboarding, coastal walks and more. This is a great way of discovering many hidden gems undiscovered by tourists, trying something new, and becoming part of the on-park community with your fellow owners.

Celebrate International Surfing Day

To celebrate International Surfing Day on 20th June, we’d love to tell you more about Lois with a quick Q&A, and find out more about her wealth of local knowledge and experience.

"Hi I’m Lois, and I’m the Water Sports & Sports Coordinator at Oyster Bay."

Tell us about yourself?

"Having grown up between Cornwall and the Northern beaches of Australia, I began surfing at an early age when my dad taught me as a 4 year old. I would then spend most of my time in the water learning new water sports, and from this I got into swimming and began competing from the age of 10. I was also in the Cornwall swim squad and also competed for Crantock Surf Life Saving Club.

After I left university I headed back to Australia, where I added to my love of water sports and trained as a swim and surf coach.

Today I reside in Newquay, just 6 miles from Oyster Bay where I live with my little dog Ralph and my partner."

What are your favourite activities?

"There are too many to choose from, and I love them all! But I really enjoy open water swimming, there are some great spots around Cornwall for this, it can be really exhilarating and a great way of getting close to nature. I also love surfing but now more on my longboard with friends instead of competing and touring on my paddleboard which I have previously done, although I still occasionally compete in races and have started to race on my paddleboard recently."

What activities do you offer at Oyster Bay?

"I have a whole host of activities which the owners love trying, these include surfing, paddleboarding, body boarding, open water swimming, anything I can do on the beach really. I also do coastal and woodland walks which are ideal for those who prefer to stay dry!"

Where are the best spots for the different activities around Oyster Bay?

"We’re really spoilt for choice here, and I find that different locations are better suited to different activities. I love Perranporth Beach and Fistral Beach for surfing, both of which are just a short drive from the park. The river Gannel offers perfect conditions for paddleboarding, while Crantock Beach and Holywell Bay are incredible for bodyboarding. When it comes to coastal and woodland walks, the whole of the county of Cornwall is a walker’s paradise."

See what our owners have to say…

“I often go along on the coastal and woodland walks offered by Lois. From this I have explored some of the most amazing areas of Cornwall. I love the fact we get to stop for a coffee and cake and it is also a great way to make friends. The walks are also a fantastic way for you see and get to know some the of the amazing areas close to Oyster Bay as Lois always has some insider/local knowledge!”

“One of the main reasons for buying at Oyster Bay was the activity programme offered, that we thought would be great for our two children. Since being here, they have learnt to surf and paddleboard. Not only have they learnt new skills but the importance of being in and around the ocean. Lois, the Water Sports Coordinator, has also been imperative in helping build confidence with the children and has given them skills for life. All in all, we find the activities and water sports offered to be fantastic and have helped make some amazing memories we will never forget. Lois has helped in so many ways and is a great asset to Oyster Bay.”
