Top Tips for keeping your furry friends safe on long walks off park

Around our parks we have lots of different walks that are ideal for taking you furry friends with you, here at Park Leisure, keeping the whole family safe is our top priority whilst you’re out and about discovering the great UK scenery. So, what are you waiting for, take a look at our top tips for keeping your dogs safe when out on your walks.

1. Keep your dog within 30ft

When you let your dog venture distances further than 30ft, they will be more likely to make impulse decisions such as running towards other dogs or people and, going into dangerous directions such as roads. Once they’re further away it will be much harder to command your dog to return.

2. Bring plenty of water

If you are walking for more than half an hour or in hot weather, it’s super important that you bring enough water to keep you and your dog hydrated. You can buy a collapsible water bottle (sold in pet stores) which are perfect for when out on long walks.

3. Countryside Code

4. Train To Recall

Dog training

Being confident that your dog will return if you were to call it is pivotal when on long walks, with so many distractions it can be easy for your dog to wander off and take a mini-adventure. Where possible, teaching recall from a young age so that they can learn to recognise your voice is a must!

5. Be careful around livestock.

When walking around livestock make sure to keep your dog on a short lead, it is important to have control of your pet and always give some space between you and the stock.

If you sense some cattle are aggressive or intimidated, you should let go of your dog as they will easily outrun the cattle and get out of the field as fast as possible.

We hope you find some great walks around our parks and that you and your four-legged friend can make lasting memories discovering the local wonders. If you want any suggestions on local walks do not hesitate to ask our on-park team for their favourites.
